Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado Environmental Stewardship
Earth Day - April 25, 2009

Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) is a nonprofit organization committed to inspiring and creating lifelong environmental stewards through outdoor volunteer experiences. Since 1984, tens of thousands of citizens led by skilled volunteer leaders have helped protect, conserve, and sustain Colorado’s natural places through their work with VOC. Volunteers can join VOC outdoor projects throughout the year and help with stewardship efforts like building and restoring trails in wilderness areas, constructing paths in city parks, and restoring fragile riverside habitat.

Nearly 200 volunteers came together to celebrate Earth Day and kick off VOC’s 2009 outdoor stewardship season with a very important volunteer effort to preserve a significant area of natural habitat at the High Plains Environmental Center.

High Plains Environmental Center is a 275-acre area of open space, ponds, and grasslands near a large housing development, just east of Loveland, Colorado. The center is considered a “suburbitat” because of its unique mix of suburban built and natural habitats. Much of the area’s natural habitat is maintained for the exclusive use of wildlife and migratory birds.

Striking a balance between human activity and wildlife habitat preservation can be challenging. Often it is not practical or wise to put fences around all natural areas. In fact, people need to spend time in nature, near their homes to feel healthy and whole. The goal of this community action volunteer effort was to help preserve and restore the area’s natural landscapes and habitat to encourage their use by wildlife.

Nearly 200 volunteers planted 1,000 native plants, shrubs, and trees to help protect wildlife areas from zones of human activity. The plants will provide food, forage, and cover for the wildlife and migratory birds that live in this suburban area.

“VOC is excited to launch its 2009 outdoor stewardship season with this important effort. We know the work of our volunteers will result in significant and long term habitat improvements,” says Ann Baker Easley, VOC executive director.

Aquafina is a proud supporter of VOC and its outdoor stewardship mission and provided bottled water to hydrate volunteers at this event.
